Part of my whole “reboot” process is to simplify life. That means, in part, getting rid of things I don’t need. Seems like in the latest iteration of iTunes they have added their “Ping” social networking. While I won’t debate the actual value of this social networking platform, I will say I didn’t want it, nor do I want many of annoying little features. The one in particular that I find most annoying is the little button that pops up next to every track while it plays.
So I wanted to “simplify” my iTunes and make this go away. I found this command that makes it go away forever on a OSX.
Open a terminal session and type the following:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown -bool TRUE
Then stop and restart iTunes. Voila! The annoying little button is gone.
If you decide you miss that little bugger, just open another terminal session and type the following:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown -bool FALSE
Similarly you can disable the Ping sidebar by typing the following in a terminal session:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes disablePingSidebar 1
and relaunch iTunes. Then to make it come back because you miss it so, open the terminal again and type:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes disablePingSidebar 0
And, at the risk of becoming repetitive, stop and relaunch iTunes.
